The Hydrocephalus Lab is located in the Biomedical Sciences Building at The University of Central Florida. The lab is solely funded by The Hydrocephalus and Neuroscience Institute, a 501(c)3 corporation started to finance the research effort at U.C.F. The Hydrocephalus Lab at U.C.F. is one of five centers actively researching a cure for hydrocephalus in the United States. This local team is working to develop improved methods for treating hydrocephalus and to ultimately find a cure for this condition. The research team consists of:
Babak Behnam MD,Ph.D - Matthias Rammling, Research Assistant Jogi Pattisapu MD, FAAP, FACS - Meenu Madan, Ph.D - Leena Paul, Lab Manager Brief Summary of our research: Cilia - Novel insights into the ciliary transport processes can lead to improved understanding of CSF homeostasis. HYDIN (hydrocephalus gene) and cilia are ideal candidates to investigate ciliary transport pathways because of their association with hydrocephalus. The team expects to identify novel ciliary disease proteins and candidate genes that interact with HYDIN and TSGA10 which may be involved with CSF homeostasis and circulation in the brain. (Click here to view Dr. Behnam's more in depth summary) Aquaporin Channels - Aquaporins (AQP) are a family of highly important membrane proteins that are bidirectional pathways that transport fluid. These channels are believed to play an important role in the pathophysiology of brain edema and hydrocephalus, and the goal is to discover a drug or other method to recruit these channels to function as gateways for CSF. The
Hydrocephalus Family Support Group holds fundraising activities to provide
funding to the Hydrocephalus and Neuroscience Institute.
We invite you to become part of this worthy effort to improve the
quality of life for many afflicted children and adults.
100% of monetary donations are
forwarded to The Hydrocephalus and Neuroscience Institute.
We continue to appreciate all of our
sponsors of our previous fundraisers.
The Hydrocephalus Family Support Group asks that you consider us when you/your company chooses a worthy, non-profit organization to support. Please contact Kim Antonetti for more information or to make a donation. (407) 649-6474 KAntonetti@PedNeurosurgery.net
